LIVING WORLD
ERNST MAYER (1904-2004)
WHAT IS LIFE ?
Life is unique, complecated organisation of biomolecules, that shows different chemical reaction resulting in activities like growth, reproduction, development, metabolism, responsiveness & adaptation.
CHARECTERSTIC OIF LIVING FORMS :-
1. Growth :-
Increase in body mass and increase in number of individual are twin charecteristic of growth.
All living organism grow. (it is a charecteristic of living systems. A dead organism does not grow.)
* in plants, this growth by cell division occurs continiously throughtout their life span.
*In animals, this growth is seen only up to certain age. However cell division occur in certain tissue to replace the lost cells.
*Unicellular orgsnism also grow by cell division.
e.g., once can easily observe in vitro culture by simply counting the number of cells under the microscope.
* In majority of higher animals and plantds,

- The Harvard University evolutionary biologost who has been called " The Darwin of 20th century" .
- He joined Harvard's Faculty of arts and science in 1953 and retierd in 1975, assuming the title of Alexander Agassize Professer of zoology Emeritus.
- Throughout his nearly 80- year career, his research spanned ornithology, taxonomy, zoogegraphy, evolution, systematics, and the history and philosophy of biology.
- He almost single-handedly made the orgine of species diversity.
- He also poineered the curently accepted definition of a biological species.
- He was awarded the three prizes widley regarded as the triple crown of biology (1) The bazen Prize in 1983.
(3) The crafoord Prize in 1999.
